Hunger Strike research:

Hunger strike is a non-violent form of resistance. Usually people don't consume food during this period of time expect water. People want others to feel guilty in order to make changes. This usually applies to political changes.

Outside influences:

1. Shadow art artist Kumi Yamashita:

Although this is not cutting shadow artworks, I like how the artist used different shades of white, grey and black and lighting to create the mood/ feeling for the photo. I found that lighting is very important to a photo since it can create shadows and different mood. Lighting can affect the idea that the artists wants to represent and how the audiences think about the photo.

2. Interior design 3D models

I learned how to make 3D interior design models from an art university during Summer. Since my artwork has a government building, I wanted to make it 3D just like the below models. The structures are very similar and i can use the techniques from the models below and make it stands out.

3. Sand Art

I looked up some sand artworks while i was designing my shadow art's layout. I think our shadow artwork and sand art is very similar since it both uses dark and light shadows to create pictures.

Here are some images for sand art:

4. Hong Kong's umbrella revolution

While i was researching for the topic hunger strike, it reminded me of the umbrella revolution in Hong kong last year. People were having hunger strike and occupying Central in order to fight for political changes. It was a very important event that happened in Hong Kong. This is a great example for hunger strike and the reason that they started it was because they want political change.

5. Photoshoot's lighting

All photoshoots have different kinds of lightings in order to represents different mood. I think it's very similiar to what we are doing in this project since we were working with shadows too. I think shadows are very powerful since they can represents different moods.

6. Black and white graphic design

Graphic designer uses space, colours to design logo and words. Grahpic designers are able to add designs on to the letter by using different shadows. A good design is able to represent different ideas and make people relate to the topic by a simple design.

It's important for us to use the negative and positive space.

Final Skectch idea:

General idea: The building represents the government is the biggest background, has control in this hunger strike event. The people holding the boards meaning they are the hunger strike fighters which means they are fighting for changes. The flags are the countries that it had hunger strikes before.

Mind map:

1. If you had to create a similar portrait like this, who would you display on the wall and why?

- I would display someone who's influential or helped the country such as the president, big company's director..etc. In this case I would like to have Steve Jobs displayed on the wall because he's a very influential person who craeted Apple and everyone reconizge him. Also, we can remind people that Steve Jobs contributed a lot to our the technological industry and how he tried and experinment a lot of time to sucess. While being an artwork, it can also remind people about Steve Jobs's contribution and as an inspirational person.

2. Where would you want to place it?

- I would want to place it in a tall building in public. This can show how important he is to the the techonology industry and more people can see it and use him as an inspiration. Since nowadays in Hong Kong it's getting very busy and people are working non-stop. Therefore i think we will need some new inspirations for people to try new things and remind them we always need to experience to sucess. Arts in public can also change the atmosphere and make it more relaxing and comfortable.

3. Other than black and white what color would you use? Why?

- I would use bright neon colors such as red/pink, yellow, orange and green to catch people's attention. Neon colors are the most eye-catching and it has the effect to brighten up the mood and atmosphere which it's usually used at night. By displaying neon colors artwork during daytime can make people feel fresh and inspirational. This can make a big comparsion between the black and white colors that have been used before. The colors can also show how passion and how Steve Jobs led us to the new stage of technological advancement.
